If you had to describe yourself regarding your health goals and your body in 3 sentences or less, what would you say?

Take a moment to write it down.

Whatever you wrote, that is most likely how you identify yourself about your health and your body.

The way that you perceive yourself in regards to your health will shape how you function on a daily basis. We humans are compelled to live up to our images of ourselves. And, if you actually have some goals regarding your health, you can use this to your advantage.

First of all, you have to identify how you see yourself. You can’t fix it if you don’t know what the problem is. Then, I invite you to tell a different story than the one you are now telling about your body and your health.

You may not believe it at first, but you certainly aren’t ever going to change if you keep telling the same old negative story.

So, let’s say you used to be really fit and lean and now you have an extra 20 pounds that you want to get rid of.

Then your goal is to lose 20 pounds and get more lean and fit right?

But if you keep telling yourself, “I USED TO BE lean and fit and now I’m overweight”, it will be very hard to break free from that and form a new persona.

You may have to do things that you haven’t been doing.

So, how about telling a different story?

How about this? “I’m lean and fit and I feel great in my body.”

That is a different story.

But maybe you don’t believe that story?

How do you get to where you can say it and mean it?

Well, first you have to say it right?

If you keep saying you USED to be lean and fit and you STILL have an 20 extra pounds then how will that ever change?

Start telling a new story

Now that you have changed your story, you have to live up to it.

As humans we feel compelled to live up to what we say. It is very unattractive in our society to have inconsistency between our beliefs and actions. We will go to great lengths to be consistent and to not appear hypocritical. It’s just human nature.

Use this to your advantage.

Then I want you to slowly but surely start adding new sub-plots to your story.

Think about what you would need to do to be lean and fit and to love your body.

Imagine what someone that is lean and fit does consistently in order to be lean and fit.

Well, one thing is that they probably go to the gym, right?

So, you can start with, “I’m someone that works out at the gym.”

Maybe right now you don’t identify as someone that goes to the gym.

How about starting to change that? There is no law that says that just because you haven’t been going to the gym, that you can’t change, right?

It’s okay to change parts of your identity.

Actually it’s necessary to change parts of your identity to reach your goals.

Health goals

You start by committing, then saying, then doing.

But I do recommend that you start small, even very small, like just joining a gym. And then commit to going once a week, start saying it, and then do it.

The more you say it, the more you will do it, and then you will start believing it. It will start becoming your reality, your identity. And then you can reach your goals?

It could be something else. Perhaps, you want to eat more veggies?

Start by saying: “I’m someone that eats 10 servings of veggies every day.”

Commit to it, say it to anyone that will listen, and start doing it. Even if you do it by adding just serving of veggies each day.

Then before you know it, you are doing it, you are saying it, and you are living it.

And going to the gym regularly and eating 10 servings of veggies a day will certainly help you get more lean and fit and to love how your body feels and looks.

Then you are really there. Your story is completely different than it was 6 months previously.

Your story used to be, “I used to be lean and fit and now I need to lose 20 pounds.”

And now it is, “I’m just someone that goes to the gym 4 days a week. I’m just someone that eats 10 servings of veggies each day. I’m lean and I’m fit and I love my body.”

BAM!

And It is a story that you believe because you are living it. It is now WHO YOU ARE!

And you will feel incredibly proud and accomplished.

This is how people get things done!

You set a goal. You create a story about what your identity is when you reach that goal. And you don’t worry about the fact that you don’t believe it yet. Just keep telling that story and plan it out. How will you get there? You have to tell sub-plots that will get you to that identity. And you just methodically work at it. Building, building, building, until you are that person.
